What do you say to your kids when they ask where they come from? If you’ve ever been stuck for a response in this situation – or if you’re simply interested in our ancient past – the Maropeng Visitor Centre has all the answers!
Maropeng is a state-of-the-art, interactive exhibition that showcases the development of humans as a species in a fun and exciting way that’s accessible to kids and adults alike.
Situated in the Cradle of Humankind, a World Heritage Site which has been home to humans and our ancestors for more than 3-million years, Maropeng takes visitors on a journey of discovery through 2 500 m2 of exhibition space and an adventurous underground boat ride.
The exhibition itself includes displays of fossils and stone tools found in the area, telling the enthralling story of how humankind was born.
The Cradle of Humankind is about an hour’s drive from Johannesburg or Pretoria.
Top tip: While you’re in the area, be sure to pay a visit to the Sterkfontein Caves as well – it’s just a few minutes’ drive from Maropeng.
The Maropeng Visitor Centre is open to the public from 09h00 to 17h00 every day. The last boat ride departs at 16h00.
